A Wall Street Journal poll last week found that former President Donald Trump’s lead over incumbent President Joe Biden is widening and solidifying.
For months, Trump had been tied with Biden or slightly trailing. Yet, as the Tampa Free Press reported on Sunday, the Journal survey showed Trump leading Biden 47-43, the biggest margin Trump’s had to date in the survey.
Moreover, Trump’s edge over Biden was padded by two points (37-31) if there is a third-party candidate in the race.
And voters seem ready to respond, even if Trump is campaigning from a prison cell, as that same Journal poll found in a question that initially got little attention.

While it is probably coincidental, last week’s revelation of Trump’s ascendancy, or Biden’s descent, came just two days ahead of a panicked move by special prosecutor Jack Smith in Trump’s criminal case for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 election by sparking the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.
On Monday, Smith requested a fast-track review by the U.S. Supreme Court of Trump’s claim to be immune from prosecution because his actions at the time were within the scope of his official duties as president.
Trump already lost that argument when left-wing District Judge Tanya Chutkan rejected his immunity claim.
Instead of taking the argument to the appellate court, Smith has leapfrogged those judges and gone straight to the Supreme Court.
George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley told Fox News that Smith’s rare move indicated that “he is really focused entirely on trying Trump during this campaign and trying to convict him before the election.”
Smith, Turley added, “seems almost obsessed with trying Trump before the election.”
But many voters indicate that it just doesn’t matter when that trial happens, or even its outcome.

In the Journal’s poll, as Revolver News pointed out on Monday, 45% responded that they would still vote for Trump if he is “convicted of a felony in either the classified documents case or Jan. 6th federal trials.”
That’s only one point behind Biden.
On the other hand, if the GOP-led House of Representatives impeaches Biden because he’s caught up in Hunter Biden’s foreign influence peddling scheme, Trump wins easily.
The Journal put his margin in that instance at 46-41.
“If you’ll recall, the crooked media and the Trump haters told us that, if convicted of a felony, President Trump would lose in a landslide to Old Man Joe Biden. This poll, by a Murdoch-owned outlet that hates Trump, destroys that narrative and shows Trump competitive with Biden even if convicted of a felony. What’s more, Biden’s support collapses if he gets impeached in the House,” Revolver News noted.
“It’s now official: the American people aren’t buying into Jack Smith’s election interference scheme,” the outlet added.
The Revovler’s reporting seemed to confirm Missouri GOP Sen. Eric Schmitt’s assessment, as reported by the Tampa Free Press on Tuesday.
“This is all part of trying to affect the election, and so it is very unusual,” Schmitt said. “We’ll see where this goes but I just think it’s sad, and I also think it is worth pointing out, … all this stuff backfired on the Democrats. President Trump is going to win the nomination.”
