TAMPA, Fla. – The Lightning announced late Thursday afternoon that Mikhail Sergachev underwent successful surgery in New York to stabilize a fractured tibia and fibula in his left leg.

The 25-year-old defenseman was injured during the second period of Wednesday night’s game against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden in what would be a 3-1 defeat.

Sergachev got tangled up along the boards with Rangers forward Jason Lafreniere as they battled for the puck. Sergachev fell awkwardly, his left leg bending beneath him and bearing his body weight.

He was noticeably upset as he was taken off on a stretcher, though he gestured to an applauding Garden crowd as he was about to be taken up the tunnel.

Sergachev returned to the lineup Wednesday after missing 17 games due to a foot injury. He had a late-night post on Instagram that expressed his bad luck in being injured right after returning.

“Oh man, why me? Why now? After all the games missed, coming back and getting injured again, feels unfair, feels terrible,” he said, in part.
